Catalog Course Description

Clinical application of theoretical concepts of nursing care for clients with illness and/or injury of the musculoskeletal, integumentary, and gastrointestinal systems. Offered for Pass/No Pass grading Only. 184 lab hours.

Course Objectives

  • in a community based health care facility demonstrate knowledge of nursing care of patients with alterations of mobility, nutrition, and elimination of solid waste, and skin integrity
  • utilize the nursing process while caring for patients with alterations of mobility, nutrition, and elimination of solid waste, and skin integrity
  • demonstrate safe, ethical and legal principles in the community based healthcare facility in compliance with the Nurse Practice Act

Lab Content

  1. Clinical application in a community-based healthcare facility of the principles and skills needed to assess clients with: illness and/or injury of the musculoskeletal, integumentary, and gastrointestinal systems.
    1. Normal and abnormal functioning 
    2. Common diseases and injuries 
    3. Utilize nursing process in the provision of client care
  2. Clinical application in a community-based healthcare facility of the theories and principles of nursing care for clients with: illness and/or injury of the musculoskeletal, integumentary, and gastrointestinal systems.
    1. Movement, positioning, and ambulation practices and limitations
    2. Use of orthopedic devices
    3. Sterile technique
    4. Infection control and isolation techniques
    5. Wound care, dressings and irrigations
    6. Ostomy care
    7. Burn care
    8. Gastric intubation
    9. Total parenteral nutrition
    10. Urinary catheterization    
    11. Pre- and post-operative care
    12. Oxygen therapy
    13. Medication administration
    14. Physical assessment

Examples of Required Writing Assignments

Using the nursing process/clinical judgement model, completion of written assignments to increase critical thinking abilities in nursing care. Complete the drug worksheet to increase knowledge of the classification, indication, contraindication, common side effects, and nursing consideration on assigned drugs.
