Catalog Course Description
This course presents the theory and principles of nursing care for clients with illness and/or injury of the gastrointestinal accessory organs, and the gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, and integumentary systems. The course presents the principles and skills needed to perform a beginning level data collection of clients with alterations of these systems within the scope of practice of the LVN. The course presents the application of the nursing process to the planning and care clients presenting with illness or injury to previously listed body systems. 54 lecture hours.
Course Objectives
- Demonstrate knowledge of nursing care of patients with alterations of nutrition and disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.
- Demonstrate entry level knowledge related to management and care of patients with ostomies.
- Demonstrate knowledge of nursing care of patients with alteration of mobility.
- Demonstrate knowledge of nursing care of patients with musculoskeletal injuries and disorders requiring orthopedic treatment.
- Demonstrate knowledge of nursing care of patients with alterations of skin integrity.
- Utilize the nursing process in relating conditions or disease to therapeutic interventions.

- Normal and abnormal functioning
- Common diseases and injuries
- Using the nursing process to plan client care
- Theories and principles of nursing care for clients with illness and/or injury of the musculoskeletal, integumentary, and gastrointestinal systems.
- Movement, positioning, and ambulation practices and limitations
- Use of orthopedic devices
- Wound care, dressings, and irrigations
- Ostomy care
- Burn care
- Gastric intubation

Examples of Required Writing Assignments
Within assigned groups, develop a nursing plan of care including at least 2 nursing diagnosis, at least 3 interventions with rational, and evaluations post interventions. As a group, develop a PowerPoint presentation to share acquired knowledge and recommendations with classmates.
