Catalog Course Description

This class focuses on several advanced hairstyling techniques including: long hair styling, special occasion styling, and creative artistry and period hair designing as well as hair extensions techniques including: strand by strand, tape-in, braiding, bonding, track and sew, netting, wigs and wig caps. 20 lecture hours, 32 lab hours.

Course Objectives

  • Analyze hair patterns
  • Analyze hair texture, density, and wave pattern
  • How to conduct a client consultation
  • Identify the appropriate extension technique for hair texture and density
  • Utilize proper tools for each extension technique
  • Utilize proper cutting techniques to blend extensions into natural hair
  • Demonstrate each extension technique using the appropriate tools in a safe and sanitary manner.
  • Design and create advanced hairstyles through wet/thermal and long hairstyling.
  • Execute advanced techniques in braiding and creative hairstyling.

Textured Hair

  1. Recognize and differentiate textured variations
  2. Choose appropriate technique and hair for different textures and wave patterns

Hair Extension Tools

  1. Pulling needle
  2. Opening and closing tools
  3. Fusion tool/wig installation
  4. Heat shield
  5. Skinweft press
  6. Needle and thread/bonding

Techniques

  1. I-Tip
  2. Micro-tip
  3. Weft/sew ins
  4. One step weft
  5. Keratip
  6. Plastic tubes
  7. Skin weft/tape-in
  8. Wig and wig cap installation

Hair Extension Maintenance

  1. Take down and removal
  2. Weft tightening
  3. Specific shampoo, conditioner, tools, and brushes 

Hair Extension Removal

  1. Glue solvent remover
  2. Copper bond removal with tool
  3. Weft removal with scissors

Advanced Hair Design

  1. Twist
  2. Knots
  3. Victory rolls
  4. French rolls
  5.  Special occasion hair
  6. Creative hair design (Avant Garde)
  7. Advanced braiding techniques (cornrows)

Visit multiple hair retailers and write up a summary and critique of the experience.

Examples of Outside Assignments

Read chapters assigned in textbook and create a look-book of before and after extensions transformations.
Research a historic time period assigned by the instructor and make a presentation of your finding. Include a minimum of five pictures of popular hair designs worn by both men and women during your assigned period, unless otherwise stated and a mannequin depicting the style. You may use a vision/presentation boards or power point. 1. Three-page written paper written with a works cited page that includes at least 2 books. MLA style 2. How would they wear their hair today and keep with the period? Reproduce one of the styles on a mannequin. 3. Historical references (what was happening in the world?) 4. Why do they look the way they look? 5. Who made the hairstyle popular? 6. Who created the style (if available) 7. Products commonly used at that time 8. Tools (such as: hooded dryer, blow dryer, curling iron, air forming) 9. Describe the design principle(s) used most often. 10. Power Point, Vision Board, Video
