Catalog Course Description

A continuation of the theory of professional haircutting and hairstyling techniques and procedures introduced in COS 141. Lectures, demonstrations and practical experience in the following areas: haircutting including the use of shears, razors, electrical clippers and trimmers, and thinning shears, shampooing, hair analysis, blow drying, curling, nonchemical straightening, and dressing. 120 lecture hours, 80 lab hours.

Course Objectives

  • Demonstrate and perform advanced haircutting techniques using the primary haircutting tools: shears, razor, clippers and texturizing shears.
  • Effectively translate the basic haircutting forms: solid, uniform, increase layer, graduated and combination form, into complex haircuts and advanced designs demomnstrating understanding of the foundational geometry of each form.
  • Interpreting and identifying various haircutting techniques involves recognizing visual elements of the haircut and understanding terminology used in descriptions
  • Design and comprehend advanced haircutting texturizing techniques.
  • Identify complex haircuts by demonstrating and modeling through audio visual/live demonstration.
  • Develop and interpret an individualized hairstyle for clients using the principles of design.
  • Consult and correctly identify hair texture and apply the proper procedures
  • Compare and contrast tools and products needed for hairstyling.
  • Develop skills and understanding of the necessary precautions with thermal equipment.
  • Create a variety of basic and advanced long hairstyling using commonly used techniques.
  • Effectively execute physical hair straightening designs for a culturally diverse market.
  • Practice safety, sanitation and disinfection procedures for electrical and non-electrical equipment.
