Advanced Placement (AP) Tests

The student must be currently enrolled to receive Credit for Advanced Placement Tests. The District will grant three to six (3-6) units of area or elective credit for an examination score of three, four or five (3, 4 or 5) in subjects of the Advanced Placement (AP) program of the College Entrance Examination Board.

The units earned from Advanced Placement do not apply toward the Citrus College residency requirements for graduation. To request credit, students must submit official copies of Advanced Placement Examination test scores with a Student Petition form to the Office of Admissions and Records.

CSU

1These units count toward eligibility for admission. The units may not all apply toward certification of the corresponding CSUGE area. See Executive Orders 1036 and 1100 for details.

2Areas of CSUGE (1A - 6) are defined in EO 1100. Areas of American Institutions (US-1 through US-3) are set forth in Sections IA and IB of EO 1061, and at assist.org.

3Students seeking Cal-GETC certification prior to transfer must have passed the test before this date.

4If a student passes more than one AP exam in calculus or computer science, only one examination may be applied to the baccalaureate. Students who take the Calculus BC examination and earn a subscore of 3 or higher on the Calculus AB portion will receive 4 quarter units for the Calculus AB examination, even if they do not receive a score of 3 or higher on the BC examination (note that the maximum credit awarded for both exams is 8 quarter units).

5Students who pass AP Environmental Science earn 4 units of credit. Tests prior to Fall 2009 may apply to either B1+B3 or B2+B3 of GE Breadth. Fall of 2009 or later, those credits may only apply to B1+B3.

6If a student passes more than one AP exam in physics, only six units of credit may be applied to the baccalaureate, and only four units of credit may be applied to a certification in GE Breadth.

The CSU policy for AP can be found at http://www.calstate.edu/transfer/requirements/advanceplacementapcourses.shtml.

UC

A score of 3, 4, or 5 is required to grant credit for Cal-GETC certification. An acceptable AP score for Cal-GETC equates to either 3 semester or 4 quarter units for certification purposes.   Each AP exam may be applied to one Cal-GETC area as satisfying one course requirement, with the exception of Language other Than English (LOTE).  (See Section 10.6.3) Students who have earned credit from an AP exam should not take a comparable college course because transfer credit will not be granted for both. There is no equivalent AP exam for Area 1B- Critical Thinking/Composition requirement.

Students earning scores of 3, 4, or 5 in the physical and biological science AP  examinations earn credit toward Cal-GETC Area 5 and meet the Cal-GETC laboratory  activity requirement.

AP exams in Biology, Chemistry, Physics 1, Physics 2 or Physics B allow CCC campuses to apply 4 semester or 5 quarter units to Cal-GETC certification. For Environmental Science, Physics C: Mechanics and Physics C: Electricity/Magnetism, 3 semester or 4 quarter units are applied for Cal-GETC certification; therefore, students who complete these exams will be required to complete at least 4 semester or 5 quarter units to satisfy the minimum required units for Area 5.

Actual AP transfer credit awarded for these and other AP exams for admission is determined by the CSU and UC.

*Computer Science A: 2 (students entering UC prior to fall 2018)

Duplication with college courses

Students should be advised that college courses taken before or after attending UC may duplicate AP, IB and/or A-Level examinations. Additionally, exams may duplicate each other (for example, an AP or IB exam in the same subject area).

If the student does duplicate an exam with another exam of the same subject content, and/or an exam with a college course, we will award credit only once. (Please see a counselor for further information).

Advisory to Pre-med Students: Many medical schools do not accept AP credit in lieu of college level course credit to fulfill admissions requirements. Students interested in medical school should consult directly with the medical schools they are considering for information on their credit policies. Students may also want to refer to www.aamc.org or www.aacom.org.
