Catalog Course Description
Training and performance in solos, trios and small ensembles from the light opera and operatic repertoire. Introduction to standard literature, languages/diction, staging, and performance of this repertoire in scenes or in full opera productions. 18 lecture hours, 54 lab hours.
Course Objectives
- demonstrate familiarity with small ensembles from the operatic repertoire
- attain analytical ability to recognize and compare repertoire and vocal styles
- develop operatic performance ability appropriate to the individual’s voice category
Major Course Content
- Review of Operatic Vocal Techniques
- Audition Technique for Opera Roles
- Assignment of Roles and Ensembles
- Rehearsals with Separate Ensembles and any Full Group Work-Music Learning
- Rehearsal-Learning Notes, Rhythms, and Harmonies
- Begin Staging Rehearsals
- Staging/blocking Rehearsals and Cleaning
- View Videos of Various Operas, Continue Staging
- Attend Live Opera Performance, Continue Staging
- Finish Staging, Begin Running Dress Rehearsals
- Public Performances Scheduled in the Community and/or on Campus
Lab Content
- Rehearsal of separate ensembles and any full group work
- Reviewing notes, harmonies, and rhythms
- Begin staging rehearsals
- Staging/blocking rehearsals and cleaning
- Finish staging, run dress rehearsals

Student will study, memorize and perform excerpts from Operatic Literature for solo, duet, and/or ensemble voices
