Catalog Course Description

A preparatory course in sight-reading for the aspiring performer/studio musician. Focus is upon polished/professional performance through the application of music theory and analysis to the sight-reading process. 54 lecture hours.

Course Objectives

  • recognize and apply concepts of diatonicism (intervals, chords, scales) to the sight reading process
  • demonstrate proficiency in musical interpretation in conjunction with the sight reading process
  • apply musical style to the sight reading process as deemed appropriate to the selection of repertoire
  • demonstrate the ability to verbalize musical expression concepts and apply them to performance
  • demonstrate the ability to work within the recording studio environment in performance and familiarization with the recording process
  • demonstrate ensemble performance within a recording environment with a multiple microphone set up and section specific mixes

  1. Diatonic Recognition
    1. Audiation/phonation of major scale intervals in simple meter
    2. All keys intonation
  2. Diatonic with Added Chromaticism
    1. Audiation/phonation of intervals with chromatic alternation
    2. All keys
  3. Rhythmic Complexity Syncopation
    1. In straight and “swung” eighths (common meter)
  4. Melodic/Harmonic Analysis
    1. Application of sight reading skills through the assimilation of musical analysis (I-II Above), i.e. visualization of music sets (pitch and rhythm), which facilitate the process of sight-reading
  5. Advanced Pitch and Rhythmic Audiation/Phonation
  6. Musical Nuances
    1. The musical performance of sight read material: dynamics, phrasing, specific nuances, and tempo changes
  7. The Click Track
    1. Musical performance with a metronomic click
  8. Inner Part Intonation within Harmonic Context – Musicality with Other Parts/Voices
  9. Stylistic Consideration within the Sight Reading Context

Formulation of performance objectives as to the stylistic interpretation of musical literature such as meter, articulation, rhythm, pitch, and historical interpretation [classical and commercial music]
Score highlighting of critical interpretation symbols for the 'pathos' within a musical performance
Transcribe a recorded performance of selected literature
