Cosmetology

Cosmetology is a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students for a wide range of careers in the beauty industry. The curriculum offers theoretical and practical disciplines as well as interactive demonstrations and hands-on applications that train students to possess knowledge, language, and skills for career opportunities in haircutting, hairstyling, hair coloring, chemical texturizing, skin care, nail care, sales, and entrepreneurship. Students will understand the importance of professionalism and artistic endeavor in this diverse industry through inspiration and challenge. This program of study also enables students to prepare for and pass the California State Board Exam of Cosmetology. 

In addition to the A.S. and Certificate of Achievement in Cosmetology, the program offers barbering coursework and an A.S. and Certificate of Achievement in Barbering.

This discipline prepares students to do the following:

  • Be prepared to pass the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology Examination and acquire California State licensure.
  • Be trained theoretically and practically in the disciplines of: haircutting, hair coloring, chemical training, skin/nails, hairstyling necessary for the professional stylist, as well as a variety of business practices.
  • Be inspired and challenged artistically through industry competitions, projects, community service and collaborative work with partnering college disciplines.

BARB 101
Introduction to Barbering

This is the introductory course for students majoring in barbering. The course includes the theoretical exploration and basic practical application of a variety of subjects including shampooing, draping, hair and scalp analysis, long haircutting techniques, hairstyling, infection control, health and safety, rules and regulations, basic anatomy, and basic electricity.

Advanced Barbering

This course is a continuation of BARB 101 and focuses on men’s haircutting techniques using shears, razors, clippers and trimmers. The course will include fades, tapers, clipper-cuts, clipper-over-comb, and scissor-over-comb techniques for wet and dry hair as well as hairstyling, skin analysis, and an introduction to basic facial and shaving techniques.

Advanced Shaving and Facial Services

This course is a continuation of BARB 102 and includes advanced theoretical knowledge and techniques in shaving and trimming of the beard. Shaving shall include but is not limited to the following techniques and procedures: Preparing the client's hair for shaving, assessing the condition of the client's skin, performing shaving techniques, applying after-shave antiseptic following facial services, massaging the client's face, and rolling cream massages. Trimming of the beard utilizes clippers, trimmers and shears while considering facial shapes.

This course includes technical and practical lab application of haircoloring and chemical texture services. Haircolor services shall include but not be limited to hair analysis, predisposition test and strand tests, formulation and mixing, categories of haircolor, coloring, bleaching, color removers. Chemical texture services shall include but not be limited to hair analysis, chemical straightening using sodium hydroxide and thioglycolic solutions, and chemical waving using acidic and alkaline solutions.

Business and Licensing Preparation for Barbers

This course is designed to prepare students for licensure and employment. The topics include working in barbershops, interviewing, money management, selling, customer service, client consultation, building a clientele, types of businesses, building a business, and product knowledge and uses. It continues the exploration of professional ethics, public safety, state board rules and regulations, and health and safety.

This course focuses on short haircuts. The course will include pixie cuts, crew cuts, undercuts, graduation, disconnected cuts, square layers, fades, and tapers, using shear, clipper, clipper-over-comb, and shear-over-comb techniques.
