Cosmetology

The Cosmetology Certificate is a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students for a wide range of careers in the beauty industry. The curriculum offers theoretical and practical disciplines as well as interactive demonstrations and hands-on applications that train students to possess knowledge, language, and skills for career opportunities in haircutting, hairstyling, hair coloring, chemical texturizing, skin care, nail care, sales, and entrepreneurship. Students will understand the importance of professionalism and artistic endeavor in this diverse industry through inspiration and challenge. This program of study also enables students to prepare for and pass the California State Board Exam of Cosmetology.

This discipline prepares students to do the following:

  • Be prepared to pass the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology Examination and acquire California State licensure.
  • Be trained theoretically and practically in the disciplines of: haircutting, hair coloring, chemical training, skin/nails, hairstyling necessary for the professional stylist, as well as a variety of business practices.
  • Be inspired and challenged artistically through industry competitions, projects, community service and collaborative work with partnering college disciplines.

COS 141
Introduction to Cosmetology

Grade Mode: Standard Letter

Strongly recommended: ENGL 101.

This is the introductory course for students majoring in cosmetology and/or hairstyling. The course includes the exploration of a variety of subjects including health & safety, disinfection & sanitation, infection control, scalp care, trichology, basic haircutting, basic hairstyling and practical experience in cosmetology. Material fee is required for this course.

This course reviews all practical areas of cosmetology learned in the foundation classes as well as State Board requirements for licensing. Students will conduct consultations, perform client services, and fill out service record cards. Business practices will be taught such as effective communication, resume building, preparing for employment, principles of selling and client building, and types of business options.

A continuation of the science, theory, professional haircoloring techniques, and procedures following COS 141. Lectures, demonstrations, and practical experience in the following areas: advanced hair coloring procedures, advanced lightening procedures, specialized color application, and corrective haircolor.

A continuation of the theory of professional haircutting techniques and procedures introduced in COS 141. Lectures, demonstrations and practical experience in the following areas: women's haircutting, men's haircutting and clipper cutting.

This course consists of theory and practical applications in skin care. Lectures, demonstrations and practical experience are in the following areas: facial treatments - manual, chemical and light therapy. In addition, the theory of temporary hair removal, tinting of eyebrows, eyelashes and the perming of eyelashes are introduced.

A study of the science and theory of professional nail care. Lectures, demonstrations and practical experience are in the following areas: manicures, pedicures, hand, arm, foot & ankle massage, nail analysis, artificial nail services/chemicals, enhancements, products, instruction on hazardous substances and chemical safety.

A continuation of the science and theory of professional hairstyling techniques and procedures introduced in COS 141. Lectures, demonstrations and practical experience in the following areas: hair care, set design, thermal styling, long hair design and creative artistry in hairstyling.

Barbering Techniques

Prerequisite(s): A student must have completed COS 141, COS 181 and 1000 hours of a cosmetology program or have a current cosmetology or barber license.

This course focuses on short haircuts and barbering. The course will include fades, tapers, clipper-cutting, clipper-over-comb, and shear-over-comb techniques. Beard and mustache trims, crew cuts, flat tops, and undercuts will also be covered.

Hair Extension Techniques

Prerequisite(s): Enrolled in a cosmetology program with a minimum of 1000 hours completed, or a licensed cosmetologist or barber (must provide proof to instructor first day of class).

This class focuses on several hair extension techniques including: I-Tip, Microtip, Skinweft, Keratip, Plastic tubes, One-step weft, and Sew-ins.
