Catalog Course Description

A course in the technical planning and execution of a live concert performance. 54 lecture hours.

Course Objectives

  • understand the logistics in planning, setting up and traveling a concert series.
  • examine the role of the lighting designer in order to understand the responsibilities of the concert technician
  • analyze the relationship of the touring technician with the production team in order to understand their role with the lighting designer, sound engineer and the rest of the concert team.
  • understand how to find resources in order put together custom concert production packages
  • put together a prep show list and disseminate that list to the correct departments
  • conduct client meetings in well organized and detail manner

Major Course Content

  1. Apply project management skills to coordinate and execute a concert tour outside the college boundaries.
  2. Learn the basic and advanced steps in setting up a sound rig.
  3. Learn the basic steps in creating job lists to distribute to the various departments involved in concert production.
  4. Learn how to delegate production needs to the various concert departments.
  5. Learn how to disseminate information to the various concert departments.
  6. Learn how to conduct a venue scouting visit.
  7. Learn how to put together a production team.
  8. Learn how put together concert crews.
  9. Learn how to prep and load concert gear.
  10. Apply stage management skills to deal with stressful live show situations.
  11. Learn how safety impacts the timeline, staff and budget of a production.

Students will write a ten page paper on the production manager interview and how they would add or change their approach to a concert production.
