Catalog Course Description
A course in which students will gain practical crew lead experience while participating in a variety of productions in any of the following: lighting crew lead, sound crew lead, running crew lead, or rigging and automation crew lead. 36 lecture hours, 54 lab hours arranged.
Course Objectives
- solve problems in technical theatre by leading a crew in the construction or set up of sets, lights and sound
- have knowledge on the set up, operation and programming of static lighting consoles to include but not limited to ETC express, ETC Insight and ETC expression, GrandMA, HOG, Virtuoso and Avolites
- have knowledge on the set up, operation and programming of digital and analog sound consoles.
- demonstrate proficiency in the skills required to lead a technical theatre crew.
- demonstrate and employ leadership skills to address the technical demands of a theatrical production.
- execute the leadership responsibilities in technical rehearsals, during production run, and strike
Major Course Content
- Assignment to production and performance lead responsibilities
- Preparation for production including necessary theatrical techniques for a crew lead.
- Identify and safely utilize appropriate tools to fulfill production requirements for performance.
- Technical theatre terminology.
- Recognize and demonstrate collaborative responsibilities with the director, stage manager, and designers.
- Demonstrate and apply leadership skills in running a production.

Examples of Outside Assignments
Students will be required to complete the following types of assignments outside of the regular class time:
Research on the use of stage lighting and sound equipment currently used in the fine and performing arts live theatre venues. Research to include but is not limited to a variety of operating techniques and abilities of consoles and stage lighting instruments as well as diagnosis of control protocols such as digital multiplexing.
