Catalog Course Description

A course in which students will gain practical experience while participating in a variety of live theatre productions in any of the following: lighting crew, sound crew, or rigging and automation crew. 36 lecture hours, 54 lab hours arranged.

Course Objectives

  • Solve problems in stagecraft through the ability to interpret working drawings and plots in the construction or set up of sets, lights and sound
  • Have knowledge on the set up and operation of static and intelligent lighting consoles to include but not limited to ETC express, ETC Insight, ETC expression, GrandMA, HOG, Virtuoso and Avolites.
  • Have knowledge on the set up and operation of digital and analog sound consoles.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the skills required for a technical theatre technician.
  • Demonstrate and employ basic skills to address the technical demands of a theatrical production.
  • Execution of assignment responsibilities in technical rehearsals, during production run, and strike

Major Course Content

  1. Assignment to production and performance responsibilities
  2. Preparation for production including necessary theatrical techniques.
  3. Identify and safely utilize appropriate tools to fulfill production requirements for performance.
  4. Technical theatre terminology.
  5. Recognize and demonstrate collaborative responsibilities with the director, designers, and crew supervisors.
  6. Demonstrate and apply basic skills in running a production.
  7. Create, maintain or set up basic production elements.

Examples of Required Writing Assignments

A minimum three page critique on each theatre and music department production for that semester.

Examples of Outside Assignments

Students will be required to complete the following types of assignments outside of the regular class time: Research on the use of stage lighting and sound equipment currently used in the fine and performing arts live theatre venues. Research to include but is not limited to a variety of operating techniques and abilities of consoles and stage lighting instruments as well as diagnosis of control protocols such as digital multiplexing.
