Catalog Course Description
A course designed to assist students in planning and accomplishing meaningful learning objectives related to a STEM discipline during an internship or paid work experience. Credit may be accrued at the rate of 1 to 6 units per semester for a maximum of 16 units. Students must work 75 paid hours or 60 non-paid hours per unit earned. 75 lab hours arranged.
Course Objectives
- Provide example(s) of how discipline-specific knowledge is applied in a work setting.
- Demonstrate one or more discipline-specific skills acquired or improved during the experience.
- List one or more career opportunities available in the discipline, and describe the duties and responsibilities of each position.
- Prepare a technical report, poster, and/or oral presentation regarding learning outcomes using discipline-specific terminology.

The specific content and methods of study may vary depending on the particular STEM discipline, but the following are common content areas:
- Participate in student orientation
- Read discipline-specific publication(s) in preparation for training site experience
- Develop resume and job search skills
- Participate in training-site learning setting
- Create formal presentation or paper to describe training-site activities and outcomes
- Communicate with working professionals to understand career pathways

Examples of Required Writing Assignments
Students will be required to provide a written summary, report, or poster to communicate learning outcomes of training-site experience. An oral presentation given using discipline-specific terminology may also be used for the communication component.
Examples of Outside Assignments
Students will be required to complete the following types of assignments: complete minimum hours of work, participate in training-site activities, and communicate with training-site colleagues in a professional manner. Students will be able to identify how discipline-specific concepts are applied to real-world projects. Student will be required to complete 60 hours of volunteer or 75 hours of paid work experience per credit.
