Catalog Course Description

This course is an advanced study of new technologies and techniques in multi-track recording, editing and mixing, as well as surround recording and mixing for post-production. 54 lecture hours, 72 lab hours.

Course Objectives

  • Demonstrate competency with digital and analog audio technology
  • Demonstrate thorough understanding of signal flow and ability to troubleshoot problems in the the recording process
  • Demonstrate ability to manage studio sessions and scheduling
  • Demonstrate ability to serve as a producer for a recording project

Major Course Content

  1. Studio orientation – signal path, hardware and software set-up
  2. Advanced miking techniques – alternate placement / choices and re-recording
  3. Large format consoles – digital & analog, function and layout
  4. Punching in and out – track, performance and management
  5. Console automation – advanced techniques for mixing
  6. Advanced recording with frequency, dynamics and time-based signal processors
  7. Audio post-production for motion pictures, television, and other venues and media
  8. Advanced stereo mixing and record production techniques
  9. Surround mixing – 5.1 surround hardware and techniques

Lab Content

  1. Signal path and patch bay operations
  2. Stereo miking, re-amping
  3. Console set-up, routing and functions
  4. Punching techniques, overdubs and compositing of takes
  5. Advanced mixing and console automation
  6. Audio-post production, spotting for foley, sfx, and dialogue
  7. Surround sound mixing, 5.1 set-up

Students will prepare a 3-page essay identifying project costs for pre-production, production and post-production.
