Catalog Course Description
Course Objectives
- Analyze audio component interconnections and select the proper cables and connectors to complete them.
- Operate the audio components necessary for a simple recording session - including the microphone, mixer and recorder
- Collection and analysis of audio files for project, dialog, music and sound effects
- Record dialog, sound effects and music for a short sound design assignment
- Proper file-management of audio and video files, sound effects and documentation.
Major Course Content
History and developments of audio in film and TV.
Sound and hearing, acoustics and psycho-acoustics terminology
The audio signal path, from transducers to recorders
Microphone basics - anatomy, design and application
Digital/software-based recording systems - principles and operation
Location sound theory, equipment and application.
Basic signal processing techniques
Post-production recording techniques: Dialog, Foley, sound repair, creating sound effects and ambient sound, production mixing.
Audio post-production software workflow for editing to video timeline, importing and exporting files, file management, file conversions
Audio post-production mixing techniques to enhance dialog placement, sound effect, background sounds and music to enhance sonics and aesthetics in the final mix.
Lab Content
Recording various dialog, narration, sound effects and foley, location recording.
Transferring recordings to computer, files management, inventory.
Basic audio projects such as radio ad or radio drama with appropriate music, dialog and sound effects.
Software based editing techniques, mixing techniques for video and post-production
Intro to multi-track recording and editing
Audio for video projects such as replacing sound to commercials or short TV/film clips to understand the principles of audio for video post-production.
