Catalog Course Description
The following English skills are an integral part of this course: reading, writing, speaking, listening, and vocabulary. Reading assignments will include poetry, short stories, and drama. Spelling and content words will be chosen from the assigned readings. Students will be introduced to the process of writing. Oral reports, readings, and recitations are incorporated into this course. The course format will include activity-based investigations with hands-on activities, concepts, and applications compliant with the California Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts to meet the minimum course requirements for high school graduation. 60 lecture hours.
Course Objectives
- Write clear and concise essays.
- Write autobiographical essays, as required by the state standards.
- Write expository compositions, as required by the state standards.
- Write persuasive essays.
- Revise rough drafts before writing final drafts.
- Read significant literature, including short stories, poetry, dramas, and informational texts.
- Write a research paper.
Major Course Content
- Listening, speaking, discussion, and critical thinking skills
- Parts of speech review, action verbs, sensory details, modifiers, and active voice
- Spelling, capitalization, and punctuation, including incorporating quotations
- Vocabulary building including diction, syntax, and discussion of formal vs. informal language
- Simple, compound, and complex sentence constructions, clauses and phrases
- Thesis/support development
- Paragraph development including transitions
- Narrative (biographical, autobiographical, short stories), expository (analytical, research), persuasive, response to literature and reflective essay types
- Literary terms (metaphor, simile, personification, foreshadowing, mood, tone, theme, plot, setting, characterization, fact, opinion and symbolism)
- Journal writing
