Catalog Course Description

This course involves preparation and participation in collegiate vocal jazz competitions such as the Reno Vocal Jazz Festival, the Cuesta College Vocal Jazz Festival, or the Oceanside Vocal Jazz Festival. This course may be taken four times. 54 lecture hours, 72 lab hours arranged.

Course Objectives

  • Provide overview for competitive collegiate vocal jazz competitions
  • Learn techniques applicable to competitive collegiate vocal jazz competitions
  • Apply techniques learned in rehearsal to performance in competitive collegiate vocal jazz competitions

Major Course Content

  1. Development of tonal skills for competitive vocal jazz environment.
  2. Development of rhythmic skills for competitive vocal jazz environment.
  3. Development of reading skills for competitive vocal jazz environment.
  4. Development of articulation skills for competitive vocal jazz environment.
  5. Development of stylistic jazz phrasing skills for competitive vocal jazz environment.
  6. Development of improvisation skills for competitive vocal jazz environment.
