Catalog Course Description
This course is designed to train students to thrive in the choral arts with a deeper understanding of beginning level choral techniques. Areas of study include conducting, repertoire analysis, historical practices and styles, ear training, theory and ensemble vocal technique. Public performance required. Audition required. 36 lecture hours, 18 lab hours arranged.
Course Objectives
- demonstrate a beginning level knowledge of choral performance practices from a variety of vocal styles and periods
- demonstrate beginning level familiarity with classic and contemporary choral repertoire
- demonstrate beginning level choral conducting skills in a performance setting
- demonstrate beginning level ear training, choral ensemble styles and musicianship skills
Major Course Content
- Overview of diverse repertoire for all types of choral ensembles
- Beginning vocal ensemble skills: choral tone, blend, balance, and musicality
- Introduction to rehearsal practices and professional guidelines
- Introduction to classic and contemporary performance practices
- Learn beginning level conducting methods
- Study arrangements and styles of various periods
- Preparation for beginning level ear training and music reading assessments
- Execution of public performances with student conductors
- Analysis of public performances via audio and video recording technology
