Catalog Course Description
Recommended for all beginning students interested in learning and performing repertoire for the small vocal ensemble. Includes standard vocal literature for various combinations of voices with intensive preparation in choral techniques for public concerts. Public performance required. 54 lecture hours, 18 lab hours arranged.
Course Objectives
- familiarity with beginning repertoire for vocal ensembles
- demonstrate beginning skills in reading choral music
- demonstrate an understanding of basic vocal tone for choral singing
- demonstrate an understanding of fundamentals and protocol of ensemble performance practices
Major Course Content
- Suggested Repertoire for Small Vocal Ensemble
- Vocal Skills in a Choral Setting ( creating vocal unisons within each section, establishing appropriate phrasing, breathing techniques and dynamics, developing critical listening skills, use of appropriate tone and application of correct vocal production)
- Sight-Reading of Material in Various Historic and Contemporary Choral Styles
- Beginning Rehearsal Techniques (holding and strengthening divided voice parts, expressing musical line, and internalizing interpretation of lyric )
- Introduction to Film Choral Music
- Introduction to Seasonal Choral Music
- Sectional Rehearsals
- Preparation for Multiple Performances
- Preparation for Final Performance
