Catalog Course Description

Melodic and rhythmic dictation and sight singing. Identification of intervals, chord qualities, scales, phrases and harmonic function. Required for transferring music majors. 36 lecture hours.

Course Objectives

  • hear and recognize dominant seventh, major seventh, and diminished seventh chords
  • perform melodic and rhythmic dictation at an intermediate/advanced level
  • recognize and sing the three forms of the minor scales

Major Course Content

  1. Review of diatonic and chromatic intervals
  2. Ear training exercises: triads in root position
  3. Ear training exercises: triads in first and second inversion
  4. Harmonic dictation in major and minor modes
  5. Melodic dictation in major and minor modes
  6. Rhythmic dictation
  7. Scale and mode recognition
  8. Sight-singing exercises
  9. Musical phrase recognition
