Catalog Course Description
Melodic and rhythmic dictation and sight singing. Identification of intervals, chord qualities, scales, phrases and harmonic function. Required for transferring music majors. 36 lecture hours.
Course Objectives
- hear and recognize dominant seventh, major seventh, and diminished seventh chords
- perform melodic and rhythmic dictation at an intermediate/advanced level
- recognize and sing the three forms of the minor scales

- Review of diatonic and chromatic intervals
- Ear training exercises: triads in root position
- Ear training exercises: triads in first and second inversion
- Harmonic dictation in major and minor modes
- Melodic dictation in major and minor modes
- Rhythmic dictation
- Scale and mode recognition
- Sight-singing exercises
- Musical phrase recognition
