Catalog Course Description

This course provides instruction and physical participation in the basic techniques necessary for good singing including posture, breathing, range extension and musicality. Additionally, beginning harmonic ear training provides tools for gradual improvement and musical achievement. Performance is required. 36 lecture hours, 18 lab hours arranged.

Course Objectives

  • have a basic recognition of personal and professional attributes necessary for successful singing such as proper breathing, posture, performance attitude, basic sound emission, and pitch recognition.
  • demonstrate understanding of a basic musical vocabulary of proper vocal production and identify beginning terms and symbols used in sheet music

  1. Basic Presentation of Natural, Healthy Singing Technique
  2. Basic Breathing Techniques
  3. Individual Assessment to Determine Student Strengths and Weaknesses
  4. Introduction to Basic Vocal Vocabulary
  5. Beginning Level Vocal Exercises
  6. Selection of Pieces for Application of Introductory Procedures
  7. Monthly Solo Performance Analysis
  8. Introduction to Basic Harmonic Concepts Part 1
  9. Introduction to Basic Music Reading Part 1
  10. Memorization and Rehearsal of Pieces for Final Performance
  11. Analysis and Preparation for Final Performance
  12. Final Performance

Examples of Outside Assignments

Study and Analyze Online and Live Vocal Performances. Study Audio Files on Blackboard. Apply basic techniques presented in class to appropriate literature. Rehearse vocal exercises.
