Catalog Course Description

An introductory class for the music major. Practice and skill development in melodic and rhythmic dictation, intervals, and sightsinging. Required of all music majors. 36 lecture hours.

Course Objectives

  • aurally recognize major and minor scales
  • aurally recognize diatonic intervals
  • aurally recognize major and minor triads
  • notate simple dictated melodies and rhythms
  • sight sing simple melodies
  • count rhythmic notation

  2. Exercises in Feeling Pulse
  3. Hearing Major Scales
  4. Hearing Minor Scales
  5. Drills in Major and Minor Thirds
  6. Sight Singing of Rhythms
  7. Melodic Dictation Involving Major and Minor Thirds
  8. Sight Singing Exercises Involving Major and Minor Seconds and Major and Minor Thirds
  9. Drill in Perfect Fourths and Fifths
  10. Melodic Dictation Involving Fourths and Fifths
  11. Simple Melodic and Rhythmic Dictation
  12. Melodic and Rhythmic Dictation
  13. Review for Final Examination
