Catalog Course Description

This course prepares the student for a unique instrumental ensemble experience through classroom instruction, laboratory training, and performance. Emphasis on solos as well as ensemble, study of jazz compositions, combined with an in-depth travel experience abroad. Public performance required. 72 lecture hours, 162 lab hours arranged.

Course Objectives

  • demonstrate basic musicianship skills in an ensemble setting
  • follow conductor in jazz ensemble setting
  • demonstrate basic knowledge of rehearsal techniques and procedures for jazz ensemble performances according to setting
  • explain the procedures of successful touring
  • demonstrate the ability to memorize, organize and refine concert/performance material

Major Course Content

  1. Learning and Memorization of Selected Performance Repertoire
    1. Learning and memorization of solos and other small combo pieces
    2. Learning and memorization of music and other necessary components for successful performance
  2. Sectionals and Full Group Rehearsals to Refine and Maximize Performance Abilities
    1. Smaller group/combo sectionals and rehearsals to study and refine selected materials for performance for various venues
    2. Hands-on training with instructors to refine abilities on student’s particular instrument in the full group setting
    3. Full group rehearsals to refine parts as a whole
  3. Tour Development and Preparation
    1. Pre-tour sectionals, and other rehearsals to refine performance skills for varied settings within performance tour
    2. Rehearsals and sectionals can also be held during the tour to sharpen performance
  4. Concert Tour Performances
    1. Numerous performances off-campus in various selected venues abroad
    2. Numerous performances on campus in selected venues
