Catalog Course Description
Clinical application of theoretical concepts of nursing care for clients with illness and/or injury of the musculoskeletal, integumentary, and gastrointestinal systems. Offered for Pass/No Pass grading Only. 162 lab hours.
Course Objectives
- in a local community hospital demonstrate knowledge of nursing care of patients with alterations of mobility, nutrition, and elimination of solid waste, and skin integrity
- utilize the nursing process while caring for patients with alterations of mobility, nutrition, and elimination of solid waste, and skin integrity
- demonstrate safe, ethical and legal principles in the hospital setting in compliance with the Nurse Practice Act

- Clinical application in a community-based healthcare facility of the principles and skills needed to assess clients with: illness and/or injury of the musculoskeletal, integumentary, and gastrointestinal systems.
- Normal and abnormal functioning

- Clinical application in a community-based healthcare facility of the theories and principles of nursing care for clients with: illness and/or injury of the musculoskeletal, integumentary, and gastrointestinal systems.
- Movement, positioning, and ambulation practices and limitations
- Use of orthopedic devices
- Sterile technique
- Infection control and isolation techniques
- Wound care, dressings and irrigations
- Ostomy care

- Gastric intubation
- Total parenteral nutrition
- Urinary catheterization
- Pre- and post-operative care

Examples of Required Writing Assignments
For nursing care plans and case studies, create a plan that identifies the needs of each individual client. For drug cards, use a Drug Guide for Nurses to identify the use and action of the assigned drugs, and identify classification, contraindications, and side effects and patient teaching.
