Catalog Course Description

Clinical application of theoretical concepts of nursing care for clients with illness and/or injury of the musculoskeletal, integumentary, and gastrointestinal systems. Offered for Pass/No Pass grading Only. 162 lab hours.

Course Objectives

  • in a local community hospital demonstrate knowledge of nursing care of patients with alterations of mobility, nutrition, and elimination of solid waste, and skin integrity
  • utilize the nursing process while caring for patients with alterations of mobility, nutrition, and elimination of solid waste, and skin integrity
  • demonstrate safe, ethical and legal principles in the hospital setting in compliance with the Nurse Practice Act

Lab Content

  1. Clinical application in a community-based healthcare facility of the principles and skills needed to assess clients with: illness and/or injury of the musculoskeletal, integumentary, and gastrointestinal systems.
    1. Normal and abnormal functioning 
    2. Common diseases and injuries 
    3. Using the nursing process to plan client care
  2. Clinical application in a community-based healthcare facility of the theories and principles of nursing care for clients with: illness and/or injury of the musculoskeletal, integumentary, and gastrointestinal systems.
    1. Movement, positioning, and ambulation practices and limitations
    2. Use of orthopedic devices
    3. Sterile technique
    4. Infection control and isolation techniques
    5. Wound care, dressings and irrigations
    6. Ostomy care
    7. Burn care
    8. Gastric intubation
    9. Total parenteral nutrition
    10. Urinary catheterization    
    11. Pre- and post-operative care
    12. Oxygen therapy
    13. Airway suctioning
    14. Medication administration

Examples of Required Writing Assignments

For nursing care plans and case studies, create a plan that identifies the needs of each individual client. For drug cards, use a Drug Guide for Nurses to identify the use and action of the assigned drugs, and identify classification, contraindications, and side effects and patient teaching.

Examples of Outside Assignments

Write one or more nursing care plans. Complete one or more case studies. Complete drug cards for assigned drugs.
