Catalog Course Description
This applied workshop course provides an introduction to basic audio hardware, software and recording techniques. Units include digital audio workstation set-up and operation, basic microphone techniques, software and hardware-based recording and mixing. 54 lecture hours, 72 lab hours.
Course Objectives

- describe and understand terms used in a recording studio
- demonstrate procedures used in a recording studio
- demonstrate proper microphone care and techniques
- demonstrate an understanding of both analog and digital recording
- demonstrate basic concepts of multi-track recording
- demonstrate equalization procedures
- demonstrate audio mixing procedures
Major Course Content
- Computer Operations - managing software-based (Pro Tools, etc.) audio recording and editing systems
- The Digital Audio Workstation – session set-up, signal routing and recording; file organization
- Studio Systems – the console, monitors, patch bay and recording hardware
- Microphone Techniques – selecting and placing microphones for individual and small ensemble recording
- Studio Sessions – pre-production and session planning, completion of individual and group recording projects

- Computer workstation operating system, file management, standard conventions
- Basic software-based audio recording and editing
- Recording studio set-up, hardware connections and operation
- Instrument and vocal mic’ing with single and multi-mic techniques
- Individual and group recording and mixing projects
