Catalog Course Description

Clinical application of theoretical concepts of medical-surgical nursing of clients with alterations of respiration, circulation, blood and immune system, endocrine, special senses, neurological and genitourinary conditions. Offered for Pass/No Pass grading only. 378 lab hours.

Course Objectives

  • Perform beginning level assessment of clients with disorders affecting the abovementioned systems.
  • Administer medications ordered by the physician following the seven rights of medication administration.
  • Implement care of clients who require basic and advanced nursing care in a clinical setting.
  • Evaluate care with health care team members and add to the plan of care.
  • Document basic and advanced nursing care in the style appropriate to a clinical facility, using acceptable terminology.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of critical thinking by presenting client's case at post conference and correlating all aspects of treatment and care.

      2. tracheostomy care/suctioning
      3. care of chest tubes
      4. post-bronchoscopy care

      6. postural drainage
      7. oxygen therapy

      9. CPAP/ BiPAP machines
      10. sputum collection
      11. breathing techniques
      12. incentive spirometry
      13. rib belt application
    3. Medication administration
    4. Nursing care of clients with respiratory disorders
  2. Care of the Client with Cardiovascular Disorders:
    1. Data gathering
    2. Performing/observing/assisting with the following procedures:
      1. orthostatic blood pressure measurement
      2. attachment of ECG/telemetry needs with supervision
      3. nonstress test
    3. Medication administration
    4. Nursing care of clients with cardiovascular disorders
  3. Care of the Client with Hematopoietic/Lymphatic/Immune Disorders:
    1. Date gathering
    2. Performing/observing/assisting with the following procedures:
      1. bone marrow biopsy
      2. collection of blood for lab tests
      3. allergy testing
      4. blood transfusions
      5. immunizations
      6. measuring output from drains (Jackson-pratt, hemovac)

  4. Care of the Client with a Neurologic/Sensory Disorder:
    1. Data gathering
    2. Performing/observing/assisting with the following procedures:
      1. Glasgow Coma scale
      2. pain assessment
      3. swallowing evaluation
      4. passive range-of-motion exercises
      5. communication techniques
      6. feeding
      7. seizure precautions
      8. logrolling technique
      9. application of traction

  5. Care of the Client with an Endocrine Disorder:

      1. Fingerstick glucose checks
      2. instituting hypoglycemia protocol

  6. Care of the Client with a Genito-urinary or Renal Disorder:
    1. Data gathering
    2. Performing/observing/assisting with the following procedures:
      1. peritoneal dialysis
      2. urine specimen collection
      3. urinalysis (ER)
      4. filtering urine for calculi
      5. measuring hourly urinary output
      6. measuring output from urinary diversion collection devices
