Catalog Course Description
Course Objectives
- Provide safe, caring, and culturally sensitive nursing care to clients with complex alterations in wellness involving multiple systems.
- Utilize effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills in English to provide effective care to assigned clients.
- Apply a broad theoretical knowledge base and critical thinking to the application of the nursing process and the ADN conceptual framework.
- Demonstrate a broad base knowledge and critical thinking in the application of the nursing process by both generating and modifying nursing care and care plans for geriatric clients experiencing alterations in wellness.
- Develop and implement teaching plans of increasing complexity for clients and their families.
- Perform all skills including medication administration safely and competently.
- Work ethically and collaboratively as a member of the nursing team by practicing within the scope of practice, delegating appropriately based on the legal scope of practice, and serving as a client's advocate.

Lab Content
Under the supervision of clinical instructors, this lab course places the student nurse in a skills lab with computerized simulation manikins and multiple clinical facilities to perform nursing skills on adult patients with complex alterations in wellness affecting one or more of the following systems: cardiovascular, hematological, respiratory, gastrointestinal, metabolic, musculoskeletal, and the urinary system including renal functioning. The student is expected to use the nursing process, ADN conceptual framework and the critical thinking skills throughout all phases of this care.
Some of skills included in this course are:
- Complete head to toe assessment
- Insertion of nasogastric tube
- Insertion of a Foley catheter
- Chest tube management
- Blood transfusion
- Medication administration (all routes but focus will be intravenous piggy back and intravenous push)
- Vascular access device care in a patient with dialysis
