Catalog Course Description

Exploration and performance of beginning to intermediate level brass ensemble literature. Topics include in-depth review and development of brass tone production, articulation and phrasing concepts and techniques required to correctly perform musical styles found in brass ensemble literature of the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods. Public performance required. 36 lecture hours.

Course Objectives

  • Explain and demonstrate brass characteristic tone production techniques and tone building strategies.
  • Explain and demonstrate brass articulation techniques and articulation skill building strategies.
  • Explain and demonstrate phrasing concepts and techniques for musical styles found in brass ensemble literature of the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods.
  • Explain each instrument's function in the brass choir.
  • Successfully and correctly perform musical styles found in beginning to intermediate brass ensemble literature of the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods.

Major Course Content

  1. Review and development of brass characteristic tone production techniques and tone building strategies.
  2. Review and development of brass articulation techniques and articulation skill building strategies.
  3. Review and development of phrasing concepts and techniques.
  4. Preparation and performance of beginning to intermediate level brass ensemble literature of the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods.
  5. Interpretation concepts and techniques required to correctly perform musical styles found in brass ensemble literature of the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods will be compared, contrasted and developed.
  6. The role and function of each instrument in the ensemble will be discussed.
