Catalog Course Description

This course continues the development of skill begun in MUSE 140. In addition, the following areas are covered: barre chords, additional accompaniment techniques, and major and minor scale patterns in first position. 36 lecture hours.

Course Objectives

  • play common barre-chords
  • read beginning guitar music in first position
  • play major and minor scales in first position

Major Course Content

  1. Review of basic guitar terminology and tuning and technique
  2. Introduction to barre chords
  3. Review and exercises of first position note reading
  4. Chords and exercises in the key of F
  5. Introduction to scales and scale types
  6. Note reading exercises
  7. Introduction and exercises to moveable chords
  8. Introduction and exercises to moveable scales
  9. Moveable I, IV, V7 chord progressions
  10. Accompanimental techniques and exercises
  11. Common chord extensions used in popular music

Examples of Outside Assignments

Individual practice and rehearsal of exercises and techniques provided by the instructor
Memorization of chord and scale patterns, common terms, and techniques as related to the guitar
Selected listening to guitar music of various styles
On-campus and off-campus live performances
