Catalog Course Description

Stringing, tuning, fingering, playing techniques, notation, chords and chord progressions, reading guitar music, playing simple melodies and accompaniment. 36 lecture hours.

Course Objectives

  • solve mechanical problems such as stringing and tuning
  • read beginning guitar music in first position
  • accompany voice or other instruments using simple chords and right hand textures

  1. Introduction to basic guitar terminology and tuning
  2. Correct hand position
  3. Chords and exercises in the key of D
  4. Thumb-bass right hand strumming patterns
  5. Introduction to note reading in first position
  6. Notes on the first string and reading exercises
  7. Chords and exercises in the key of G
  8. Notes on the second string
  9. Reading exercises on the first three strings
  10. Chords and exercises in the key of A
  11. Right hand arpeggios
  12. Chords and exercises in the key of E
  13. Completion of notes in first position
  14. Chords and exercises in the key of E minor
  15. Notes on the fifth string
  16. Chords and exercises in the key of C
  17. Chords in the key of A minor

Individual practice and rehearsal of exercises and techniques provided by the instructor
