Catalog Course Description

This course for music majors focuses on procedures, preparations and strategies that lead to audition success. Each student will develop a professional or transfer audition portfolio. Includes coaching, mock audition performance, and lecture and demonstration performance presentations from guest artists and academic and industry experts. 18 lecture hours, 72 lab hours arranged.

Course Objectives

  • demonstrate knowledge of audition standards and requirements for their selected music career path.
  • research and select instrument-appropriate audition literature and reference recordings.
  • compile an appropriate and effective audition portfolio.
  • correctly prepare for audition performance.
  • evaluate audition performances (of others.)
  • effectively perform an audition.

Major Course Content

  1. Overview of audition traditions, standards and requirements, and the implications of different career paths.
  2. Student selection of career path.
  3. Presentation of research techniques.
  4. Research music industry standards for audition performance and university audition requirements.
  5. Review instrument-appropriate audition literature.
  6. Research and study recordings of potential audition literature.
  7. Select audition portfolio literature.
  8. Prepare and submit research on selected audition literature.
  9. Begin audition performance preparations- individual practice.
  10. Small group and individual coaching.
  11. Guest speakers and media presentations.
  12. Workshops.
  13. Student self-assessment and modification based on critique.
  14. Preliminary mock auditions.
  15. Refine audition performance skills.
  16. Continue small group and individual coaching.
  17. Preparations for final mock audition.
  18. Final mock audition performance.
  19. Written reflection assignment of observed and performed final mock auditions.
