Catalog Course Description
This course is designed to provide students with the foundational knowledge and practice at reading construction plans. Both residential and commercial construction drawings will be covered. The set of plans, such as the foundation plan, floor plan, elevations, sections and details that must be assembled into an organized set of drawings to show as much how plans are studied and analyzed. 36 lecture hours.
Course Objectives
- Given the basic contract anatomy, identify the key elements of contracts.
- Using actual construction specifications, interpret specifications pertaining to different types of construction elements.
- Understand and apply the basic order of precedence in contraction documents to resolve subject conflicts.
- Demonstrate ability to interpret and extract information from the various project documents, as directed in lab exercises.
- Explain the how the baseline contract documents can be changed to meet specific project needs and/or requirements.
- Analyze and resolve conflicts between contract documents governing the same requirement, given a specified construction requirement.
- Identify and explain the fundamental roles and scopes of authority of the owner, contractor, construction manager and architect/engineer and its grounding on what is prescribed in the construction contract documents.

Conduct reading of instructor-assigned construction documents based on instructor handouts and library research.
Examples of Required Writing Assignments
Given basic sample contractor materials submittals, prepare a basic review of the submittals to verify conformance with assigned contract specifications.
Examples of Outside Assignments
Write a report that describes the evolution of Computer Aided Drafting over the 20 years, addressing current practices & trends, comparisons of tools & techniques.
