Catalog Course Description

This course provides an overview of the art and architecture of Africa, Oceania and Indigenous North America. 54 lecture hours.

Course Objectives

  • Demonstrate a knowledge of representative works of art and architecture from Africa, Oceania and Indigenous North America.
  • Recognize the change in art styles and techniques in representative works of art and architecture from Africa, Oceania and Indigenous North America.
  • Evaluate forms, functions, and the interrelationship of representative works of art and architecture from Africa, Oceania and Indigenous North America.
  • Compare and be able to recognize historic and national styles as well as individual art styles of representative works of art and architecture from Africa, Oceania and Indigenous North America..
  • Distinguish and recognize major art monuments representative of art and architecture from Africa, Oceania and Indigenous North America.
  • Comprehend terms, techniques and processes of representative works of art and architecturefrom Africa, Oceania and Indigenous North America.
  • Appreciate and assess the media, and art forms in the representative works of art and architecture from Africa, Oceania and Indigenous North America.

This course covers the art and architecture of the following periods:

  1. Prehistory and Early Cultures of African
  2. African art from 1st through 19th centuries 
  3. Art of Australia, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia
  4. Art of Indigenous Native America 
  5. Contemporary Art

Examples of Required Writing Assignments

Write a paper on a museum visit. Essay exam comparing artworks from different periods to demonstrate mastery of course material. Reading responses analyzing assigned academic articles, focusing on the author's argument, evidence and the student's evaluation of the author's argument.

Examples of Outside Assignments

Choose one work by an artist displayed in the collection of the museum you visit and visually analyze the formal qualities of the piece and relate them to relevant artworks and cultures from class. Opinion paper on repatriation of artworks to country of origin.
