Catalog Course Description

This course provides an overview of art and architecture from the Renaissance to the Contemporary period. 54 lecture hours.

Course Objectives

  • Demonstrate knowledge of representative works of art and architecture from the Renaissance to the contemporary period.
  • Recognize the change in art styles and techniques in representative works of art and architecture from the Renaissance to the contemporary period.
  • Evaluate forms, functions, and the interrelationship of representative works of art and architecture from the Renaissance to the contemporary period.
  • Compare and be able to recognize historic and national styles as well as individual art styles of representative works of art and architecture from the Renaissance to the contemporary period.
  • Distinguish and recognize major art monuments representative of art and architecture from the Renaissance to the contemporary period.
  • Comprehend terms, techniques, and processes of representative works of art and architecture from the Renaissance to the contemporary period.
  • Appreciate and assess the media, and art forms in the representative works of art and architecture from the Renaissance to the contemporary period.

Major Course Content

This course covers the art and architecture of the following periods:

1. Proto-Renaissance in Italy

2. Italian Renaissance and Mannerism

3. Renaissance in Northern Europe, with empahsis on art of Flanders

4. Baroque and Rococo

5. Neoclassicism, Romanticism, and Realism

6. Impressionism and Post-Impressionism

7. Major movements of the 20th-century

8. Contemporary art

Academic articles, primary sources, and other resources distributed by the instructor or linked off course website.

Examples of Required Writing Assignments

Essay exam comparing artworks from different periods to demonstrate mastery of course material. Reading responses analyzing assigned academic articles, focusing on the author's argument, evidence and the student's evaluation of the author's argument.

Examples of Outside Assignments

Choose one work by an artist displayed in the collection of the museum you visit and visually analyze the formal qualities of the piece and relate them to relevant artworks and art periods discussed in class.
