Catalog Course Description

This course is a project-based course intended to solidify the core principles of audio. Projects will include recording, mixing and mastering, post-production and surround mixing techniques. 54 lecture hours, 72 lab hours.

Course Objectives

  • Demonstrate advanced procedures used in a recording studio
  • Demonstrate a variety of multi-track recording techniques
  • Demonstrate post-production techniques
  • Be able to produce a finished studio project

Major Course Content

  1. Hardware interface – patch bay routing and connections 
  2. Console operations – gain structure, signal routing and processing 
  3. Advanced session procedures – set-up and microphone techniques 
  4. Advanced music and soundtrack mixing using console automation  
  5. Advanced signal processing using frequency, dynamics and time-based effects 
  6. Field and studio recording techniques for film and television audio   
  7. Advanced spotting, sound creation and editing for audio post-production       
  8. Surround mixing – 5.1 software and hardware set-up and operation

  1. Studio hardware – interconnections and operations
  2. Console operations – analog and digital
  3. Advanced mic technique – stereo and surround miking
  4. Advanced digital/analog console automation
  5. Spotting and foley/dialogue creation for audio post-production
  6. 5.1 surround mix techniques – mixing and monitoring
