Catalog Course Description

Instruction in scales, chords, and arpeggios in all keys and positions. Improvising, accompanying, sight reading, transposing, and performing of popular and classical styles. 36 lecture hours.

Course Objectives

  • play barre-chords in all positions
  • read beginning guitar music in first through fifth position
  • play major and minor scales in all positions

Major Course Content

  1. Review of scales and chord types and technique
  2. Introduction to more advanced chords
  3. Note reading exercises in higher positions
  4. Introduction and exercises in chord transposition
  5. Elements of solo guitar playing
  6. Solo repertoire development
  7. Introduction and exercises in contemporary guitar techniques
  8. Introduction and exercises in contemporary guitar chord voicings
  9. Introduction and exercises in jazz and popular improvisation

Examples of Outside Assignments

Individual practice and rehearsal of exercises and techniques provided by the instructor
Memorization of chord and scale patterns, common terms, and techniques as related to the guitar
Selected listening to guitar music of various styles
On-campus and off-campus live performances
