Catalog Course Description

Special rehearsal and public performance above and beyond normal class expectations- intermediate level. 18 lecture hours, 54 lab hours.

Course Objectives

  • apply intermediate level popular dance combinations such as hip-hop as they pertain to the presentation of choreography
  • dance as a member of an ensemble and provide leadership to fellow students
  • evaluate intermediate level popular choreography styles as it relates to music
  • competently perform intermediate level popular dance-choreography such as hip-hop before the public

Major Course Content

  1. Intermediate Level Pop Dance Performance Skills
    1. Memorization- Extended Choreographic Sequences
    2. Interpretation- Variance in Stylistic Interpretation through Character Dance 
    3. Consistency in presentation
    4. Ensemble blending and integration of character through dance
  2. Dance Development
    1. Dance vocabulary- Application of Intermediate level jazz and musical skills
    2. Dance skills- introduction to professional standards and practices
    3. Applied intermediate level dance techniques
  3. Public Performance: Pop or Christmas Show
  4. Public Performance: Touring

Lab Content

  1. Rehearsal of Given Intermediate Choreographic Combinations
  2. Assimilation of Instructor Notes- integration to character
  3. Application of Research and Home Study
  4. Refinement of Notes through Individual Rehearsal
  5. Group Feedback- group projects as homework
  6. Rehearsals on Set and in Costume
    1. Spacing Rehearsals- multiple numbers and stage pictures
    2. Orchestra Rehearsals- integration of intermediate solo work through movement
    3. Sound Rehearsals- integration of stamina and performance work
    4. Lighting Rehearsals- finding light as an individual
    5. Costume Fittings- etiquette and "making the costume work"

  8. Individual Rehearsals and Assimilation of Notes
    1. Memorize Gestures- Intermediate Level
    2. Memorize Spacing- Intermediate Level
